The Church commemorates Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious
Orthodox Christians honor the saint who, through his martyrdom, became a model of unwavering faith and one of the most venerated saints of God.
On May 6 (April 23 according to the Julian calendar), the Church celebrates the memory of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious – one of the most revered saints in Christendom.
Saint George was born in ancient Berytus (modern-day Beirut), at the foot of the Lebanon mountains, to noble and pious Christian parents. From childhood, he was nurtured in the holy faith. His father, having confessed the name of Christ with boldness, received a martyr’s crown while George was yet a youth.
Advancing in age and strength, he entered military service and quickly distinguished himself by wisdom, valor, and virtue. Handsome in appearance and noble in bearing, he rose to the rank of military tribune and became greatly favored by Emperor Diocletian.
Yet when the Emperor began his cruel persecution of the Church, Saint George, filled with divine zeal, boldly confessed himself a servant of Christ. Refusing to offer sacrifice to idols, he was seized and subjected to grievous tortures over eight days. But the grace of God sustained him, and he remained unshaken. At last, he was beheaded in the year of our Lord 303, receiving a martyr’s crown and entering into the joy of his Master.
Because he triumphed over tormentors and demons alike, and worked great wonders both in life and after death, he is rightly called Victory-Bearer – Trophēphoros. His intercession is a source of strength and consolation for all the faithful.
Among his many wonders, the miracle of the dragon is most renowned. It is told that in a pagan land near Berytus, a fearsome serpent dwelled in a lake, devouring the people. To appease the beast, the townsfolk cast lots and offered their maidens as sacrifice. One day, the lot fell upon the only daughter of the local ruler.
As the maiden awaited her death, behold, Saint George appeared upon a white steed, radiant with light. With his spear, he pierced the dragon and delivered the girl. Through this sign, the people were brought to repentance and baptized into Christ, and the darkness of idolatry was dispelled.
On this festal day, the faithful gather in temples of the Lord, offering hymns of praise and thanksgiving to the holy Great Martyr. With fervent hearts, they entreat his aid, asking that he intercede before the throne of God, granting us courage, protection, and steadfastness amid the trials of this life.
