Anglican LGBT bishopess: Ecumenism is part of our way of life
Prejudices hinder interfaith relations, believes the lesbian bishopess from Brazil.
LGBT bishopess from the Anglican Church of Brazil, Magda Guedes, stated that overcoming "prejudices and mistrust" is the main condition for building interfaith relations. She mentioned this before the September webinars on the "Lambeth Call to Interfaith Dialogue," writes anglicannews.
"Ecumenism is part of our ethos, our way of being Anglican," stated the LGBT Bishopess, who is also a member of the commission on ecumenism and interfaith relations. She urged Christians to respect religious and cultural diversity while interacting with representatives of other denominations and faiths.
In her belief, among the greatest obstacles to ecumenism are "prejudices and mistrust," overcoming which, according to Guedes, is important "to act together on common agendas".
"Engaging with other religions is also important because the diversity of peoples, cultures, languages and religions makes up the plurality of our world, and with respectful dialogue with other dimensions of faith, we can bear witness that it is both possible and desirable for us to work together," she believes.
As reported by the UOJ, on July 30, 2025, Bishopess of Monmouth Cherry Vann was elected the new Archbishop of Wales, becoming the first woman and openly lesbian to head an Anglican See in the United Kingdom.
