Bulgarian PM on EU sanctions against ROC: The time of crusades is over
Rumen Radev spoke out against extending sanctions policy into the religious sphere.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said the European Union must not turn its policy into a tool for fighting religion. This was reported by BNR News.
Before leaving for the EU summit in Brussels, where the 21st sanctions package is set to be discussed, the head of government stressed that Bulgaria intends to defend the interests of its economy and spiritual sphere.
According to Radev, the current confrontation has long since gone beyond economics and sports, spreading to culture and now to faith as well. “I think the time of crusades is over. What signal are we sending when we extend sanctions and war to religion? Do we realize where this leads?” the prime minister asked. He noted that Bulgaria’s position when voting on new restrictions would take these risks and specific circumstances into account.
As the UOJ reported, Bulgaria blocked sanctions against Patriarch Kirill.
