In Montenegro, Albanian party demands demolition of Orthodox church
Montenegro’s Albanian party, representing the Muslim minority, is calling for the removal of a Serbian Orthodox temple from the summit of Mount Rumija.
On August 9, 2026, the Albanian party "Democratic Union in Montenegro" demanded that the authorities demolish the temple of the Serbian Orthodox Church on the summit of Mount Rumija, reports Vijesti.
Party leaders Mehmet Bardi and Saubih Mehmeti submitted a petition with nearly a thousand signatures to the authorities. They demand the removal of the church and a ban on placing religious objects on the summit of Rumija.
The church was erected by the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral of the Serbian Orthodox Church in 2005. The authors of the petition describe its appearance as an "occupation," and the Orthodox shrine itself as a "provocation and threat" to the Albanian population living in the area.
The Albanian minority of Montenegro predominantly professes Islam. However, the party itself presents the petition specifically as an Albanian political force.
