Sandu calls Moldovan Church a tool of Russian influence

The President of Moldova accused the Church of serving Russian interests.
On July 30, 2025, an extraordinary meeting of Moldova’s Supreme Security Council was held under the chairmanship of President Maia Sandu, during which she labeled the Church of Moldova a tool of Russian influence.
According to her, the Russian Federation is seeking to interfere in the country’s electoral process and to buy votes using cryptocurrency.
Sandu stated that the Church is being “used in the interests of another state.”
“In this context, I want to remind all clergy that betraying one’s own country is not only a crime, but also a great sin,” the Moldovan president declared.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Maia Sandu had denied rumors of a possible ban on the Church of Moldova.
