Roman Catholic priest brutally beaten during his last Mass in Northern Ireland

The police are investigating the incident as an attempted murder.
In Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, Catholic priest Fr John Murray, who was preparing to hold his last Mass before retirement, was brutally beaten at St. Patrick's Church. An unknown assailant struck him on the head with a bottle, causing serious injuries, reports BBC.
According to law enforcement, the attack occurred on Sunday morning, August 10, 2025.
A man entered the church, asked the priest to hear his confession, and then attacked him. Fr John Murray was diagnosed with broken arm bones, he also received a severe blow to the head and lost a lot of blood. After urgent hospitalization in a Belfast hospital, his condition was assessed as serious but not critical.
Bishop Alan McGuckian, who visited the victim, stated that Fr Murray has served the diocese for 50 years and was scheduled to retire next weekend. According to him, «a very special moment was ruined».The bishop said "a very special moment was just shattered".
On the same day, police detained a 30-year-old man on suspicion of murdering another resident of Downpatrick – the investigation is checking whether this crime is related to the attack on the priest.
Law enforcement is investigating the incident with the priest as an attempted murder.
