The election of a new abbot of the Sinai Monastery is scheduled for Sunday.

On September 12, 2025, Archbishop Damianos officially stepped down from his position as abbot and archbishop of the Monastery of St. Catherine the Great Martyr on Mount Sinai in Egypt. This was reported by ekathimerini.

Archbishop Damianos had been abbot of the monastery for more than five decades. His resignation was expected, as he had earlier announced that he would leave his post on Friday.

The vote to elect a new archbishop is scheduled for Sunday, September 14. The former abbot stated that he would not be present due to health reasons.

In his statement, he expressed the hope that the monks would choose the most suitable successor, urging “unity and support from all, free from personal ambitions and obsessive ideas.”

It should be recalled that the Synod of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem deposed Archbishop Damianos of Sinai on September 8. The Synod took into account the decision of the Sinai brotherhood and Damianos’s letter of resignation, ruling that his title would officially change as of September 12.
