Patriarch Theophilos discusses protection of Jerusalem with Erdogan
The parties confirmed the importance of the status quo for preserving the sacred heritage of Jerusalem.
On September 13, 2025, in Istanbul, there was a meeting between Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem and President of Turkey Recep Erdogan. During the negotiations, Patriarch Theophilos highlighted the significance of the Pact of Omar, concluded in the 7th century between Patriarch Sophronius of Jerusalem and Caliph Omar ibn al-Khattab. This historical agreement laid the foundations for the protection of Christian holy sites and religious institutions in the region.
The Patriarch noted that Muslim rulers, as successors of the Pact of Omar, bear the responsibility for protecting Christian communities and holy sites. This mission is exemplarily fulfilled today by the Hashemites as custodians of the holy sites of the Holy Land.
Referring to the words of Apostle Paul: "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone," the Patriarch emphasized that the spirit of peace should guide the protection of the historical status quo, which preserves the sacred heritage of Jerusalem.
In conclusion, it was noted that cooperation is necessary to ensure that the holy sites remain a source of unity and hope for all the peoples of the region.
