In Kyiv university, UOC hierarchs discuss church–state relations
Representatives of the episcopate of the UOC took part in an academic round table devoted to the issue of relations between the Church and the state.
By the blessing of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry, a delegation of the UOC took part in an academic round table on the topic “The Quality of Legislative Frameworks and State Activity Regarding the Problems of Contemporary Ukrainian Orthodoxy,” organized by the Ukrainian State University named after M. Drahomanov, according to the Information and Educational Department of the UOC.
The event was attended by Metropolitan Clement of Nizhyn and Pryluky, Metropolitan Augustin of Bila Tserkva and Bohuslav, and Archbishop Sylvester of Bilohorodka, Rector of the Kyiv Theological Academy and Seminary.
The discussion was moderated by D. V. Bondarenko, Head of the Department of Cultural Studies, Theology, and Religious Studies at the Ukrainian State University named after M. Drahomanov. Participants in the round table included clergy of Orthodox jurisdictions in Ukraine, representatives of the Faculty of Philosophy of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and staff members of the Department of Religious Studies of the H. S. Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
During the discussion, participants examined problematic aspects of the Law of Ukraine “On the Protection of the Constitutional Order in the Sphere of Activity of Religious Organizations,” the issue of military deferment for clergy, prospects for the development of religious life in Ukraine, and possible ways to resolve the crisis in interconfessional relations.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that His Beatitude presided over the patronal feast of the church of the Kyiv theological schools.
