Euro coins featuring Orthodox saints issued in Bulgaria
The Bulgarian National Bank has developed the design of euro coins featuring saints significant for the country.
Bulgaria has issued euro coins bearing images of Orthodox saints, reports Bulgarian National Radio.
From 1 January 2026, Bulgaria will officially join the Eurozone. In preparation for this, the Bulgarian National Bank has developed the design of the euro, which from 2026 will become the country’s sole currency. The 1-euro coin depicts the Bulgarian saint John of Rila, while the 2-euro coin features Paisius of Hilendar, who stood at the origins of the Bulgarian national revival of the nineteenth century. The edge of the 2-euro coin bears the engraved inscription: “God, protect Bulgaria”.
The euro cent coins depict the Madara Rider, a symbol of Bulgarian statehood.
The coins have a common side shared by all eurozone countries and a national side, inscribed in Cyrillic.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that the Bulgarian Patriarch will pay an official visit to the Phanar.
