Patriarch Bartholomew will travel to Tbilisi for the funeral of Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia, which is set to take place on March 22.

It has become known that Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople will arrive in Tbilisi for the funeral of Patriarch Ilia II of All Georgia, scheduled for March 22, a UOJ correspondent reports, citing Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Earlier, Patriarch Bartholomew sent condolences to the Holy Synod of the Georgian Church, noting the significance of Patriarch Ilia II’s ministry.

Delegations from the Local Orthodox Churches are also expected to attend, though their final composition is still being уточнено. The Georgian Orthodox Church notes that, because of the tense international situation and restrictions on air travel, the arrival of some guests may prove difficult.

Earlier, the Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church resolved that the funeral service would be held on Sunday, March 22, after the Divine Liturgy. Afterward, the body of the departed Patriarch will be laid to rest in the historic Sioni Cathedral in Tbilisi.

The coffin with the body of Patriarch Ilia II of All Georgia has been placed in the Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba) in Tbilisi, where the public farewell is underway. The cathedral remains open around the clock, and thousands of faithful are coming to pay their final respects to the Patriarch.

Earlier, the UOJ reported that Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia had departed to the Lord.
