Liturgies continue at the Holy Sepulchre, Romanian Church cleric says
Despite shelling and restrictions, liturgical life in Jerusalem has not ceased.
Services continue to be celebrated at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre despite military activity and restrictions on access to the holy sites. This was stated by Archimandrite Ioan Meiu, representative of the Romanian Orthodox Church in the Holy Land, Basilica.ro reports.
According to the clergyman, the real situation in Jerusalem differs from the alarming reports circulating online. He noted that although Israel’s airspace remains closed to commercial flights and rocket attacks occur regularly, the cities are not suffering the kind of devastation often described on the internet.
The archimandrite said that on the previous day, rocket fragments had fallen in the area of the Holy City, but no one was injured. At the same time, restrictions on visits to the holy sites are temporary in nature and are connected both with the military situation and with the period of Ramadan.
The priest stressed that the restrictions apply not only to Christians, but also to followers of other religions. At the same time, liturgical life continues – both at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and in Romanian church communities in Jerusalem and Jericho.
As the UOJ previously reported, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, along with synagogues and mosques, was closed in Jerusalem because of security threats.
