The head of state invited the Ecumenical Patriarch to mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.

On April 4, 2026, in Istanbul, the President of Ukraine met with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, according to the presidential office. One of the central topics of the conversation was “the development of the church in Ukraine.” The official Ukrainian readout also said the meeting focused on support for Ukraine, the fate of Ukrainian children, and efforts to achieve a dignified peace.

The two sides also discussed support for affected regions and assistance to the families of servicemen. The President thanked the head of the Phanar for the “Warmth for Ukraine” initiative and for his constant prayers. Patriarch Bartholomew said he is concerned about the fate of prisoners and children taken to Russia.

The head of state also informed his interlocutor about the progress of peace negotiations and his contacts with the American team. The presidential office added that Patriarch Bartholomew expressed condolences over the death of Filaret Denysenko.

Zelensky invited the head of the Phanar to visit Ukraine this year. He noted that the country will mark 35 years since the restoration of its independence. In response, Patriarch Bartholomew observed that this year also marks 35 years since the beginning of his patriarchal ministry. According to the presidential office, the Patriarch said those two anniversaries could be “combined and celebrated together.”

Earlier, the UOJ reported that the Georgian Church had responded to remarks by Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service about alleged Phanar interference in the elections.
