Sensors installed at St. Sophia of Kyiv to record missile strikes
UNESCO funded the installation of a monitoring system and the work of Italian specialists to protect the cathedral from vibrations.
Twenty-eight seismic sensors have been installed at the National Reserve “St. Sophia of Kyiv” with UNESCO support. They will record the impact of missile attacks, explosions, and drone flyovers on the condition of the ancient cathedral’s structures. This was reported by Suspilne Kyiv.
Specialists placed 20 sensors on St. Sophia Cathedral itself and another eight on the complex’s bell tower. UNESCO also funded the purchase of software, a computer for processing the data, and the work of Italian specialists who installed the system.
According to Neli Kukovalska, director general of the reserve, the sensors respond to any external vibrations – from missile impacts to city traffic and large public concerts.
The data collected will help engineers create a digital model of the monument’s condition so that the most vulnerable sections of the buildings can be reinforced in time. The equipment will also make it possible to track tremors from the Vrancea seismic zone in Romania, which is expected to become active in the coming years.
As the UOJ reported, the head of St. Sophia of Kyiv was suspended over a wedding held in the church on Good Friday.
