Poroshenko prayed with the Uniates and called on Ukrainians to unite around the UGCC
The ex-president emphasized that the UGCC stands alongside its people.
Former president Petro Poroshenko prayed with Greek Catholics at a pilgrimage in Stradche, and called the UGCC «a church that, in the most difficult times of our history, not only prays for Ukraine but also stands alongside its people».
Speaking about the Uniate service, Poroshenko stated that «the final victory of good over evil always begins with unity». According to him, «this unity did not arise on its own — it was built over the years by people who never lost faith in Ukraine».
The former president entered the altar during the service and shook hands with the head of the UGCC.
Poroshenko expressed «deep gratitude to all the bishops, priests, and laypeople of the UGCC» for their service to Ukraine, and made special mention of Sviatoslav Shevchuk. «In the darkest days of the war, your voice never fell silent when it came to truth, to the suffering of the Ukrainian people, to the condemnation of evil, to the defense of human dignity», he stated.
Poroshenko declared that the Russian Federation seeks to «destroy us spiritually», and contrasted these attempts with the work of the UGCC. «For us, it is important that the voice of the Christian world sound clearly and uncompromisingly», he concluded.
Previously, the SPJ reported that Poroshenko spoke about the earthly trinity at a service with the Uniates.
