Authorities attempt to legalize seizure of Cherkasy cathedral, media reports
Cherkasy prosecutor's office demanded that city authorities transfer the cathedral to communal ownership.
The district Prosecutor's Office sent a request to the Cherkasy city council, stating that information about the owner of the cathedral complex is currently "absent", reports the Telegram channel "Dozor".
The prosecutors request that officials "establish" the owner and initiate the procedure of transferring the church to communal ownership if the owner turns out to be "unknown".
At the same time, the text of the document acknowledges that the ownership right to the cathedral was officially registered under the Administration of the Cherkasy Eparchy of the UOC as far back as December 10, 2018. However, the agency refers to a Ministry of Justice order of March 2024, by which this record was annulled.
The organizers of the cathedral's seizure have been unable to find a legal loophole for its re-registration, and are therefore attempting to legalize the raiding through municipal structures.
As the UOJ reported, an activist who fired a shot inside the Cherkasy cathedral staged a provocation against a UOC hierarch.
