The head of the Presidential Office attended an OCU celebration at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra marking the monastery’s 975th anniversary.

Head of the Presidential Office Kyrylo Budanov took part in a ceremonial OCU “service” at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and spoke of what he described as the special spiritual status of the Ukrainian people.

In comments to journalists, Budanov emphasized the God-chosen status of Ukrainians.

“Ukraine is God’s chosen people, and it is certainly God’s chosen nation among the Slavs," the head of the Presidential Office said.

According to Budanov, as long as the Lavra stands – which he called the largest Orthodox shrine in the world – Ukraine will stand as well.

He also stated that Orthodoxy came to the Slavic peoples from Kyiv and that no one would ever be able to change that.

As the UOJ previously reported, the OCU reached an agreement for monks from the Athonite New Esphigmenou Monastery to visit the Lavra.
