Ukraine to begin search in Poland for remains of WWII victims
Searches for the burial sites of Ukrainian civilians killed in 1944 are expected to begin in the Polish village of Lasków in August.
On July 15, 2026, Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland Vasyl Bodnar said that searches for the burial sites of Ukrainian civilians in the village of Lasków could begin as early as August, RMF24 reports.
The search concerns residents of Ukrainian villages who, according to the Ukrainian side, were killed in 1944 by units of the Polish Home Army and the Peasant Battalions.
“Last year, we submitted three applications to the Institute of National Remembrance regarding this matter, one of which has already received support. We now only need approval from the regional heritage conservation officer. We hope to begin the first work in Lasków in August,” Bodnar said.
The Ukrainian side also requested permission to conduct searches in Sahryń and Przemyśl. Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance said it had approved the work in Lasków, while requesting additional documents for the other two locations.
In 2025, Ukrainian specialists carried out searches in Jureczkowa, where members of the UPA killed in 1947 were believed to have been buried. However, no burial sites were found during the investigation.
As the UOJ previously reported, exhumations of victims of the Volhynia tragedy began in the Rivne region.
