In Canada, a Christian woman was euthanized against her family's wishes

An 83-year-old Canadian woman was euthanized despite her previous refusal on Christian grounds and her relatives' objections.

On July 10, 2026, in Canada, Brigitte Stegemann was subjected to euthanasia despite her relatives' objections. This was reported by LifeSiteNews.

The 83-year-old Stegemann lived in a nursing home in Ontario, suffered from cognitive impairment and stage IV stomach cancer. Relatives claim that she had previously refused euthanasia due to her Christian beliefs; however, while her granddaughter — who held power of attorney — was absent, staff at the facility began discussing the procedure with her again.

During the assessment, the woman, according to the family, was unable to answer a number of simple questions and showed signs of disorientation. Despite this, the doctor deemed her capable of independently consenting to euthanasia.

On the eve of the procedure, Stegemann broke down in tears and repeatedly told her granddaughter that she had made a mistake. On the day of the euthanasia, she also did not give verbal confirmation of her consent, even though the family had previously been promised that it would be obtained immediately before the procedure. Despite this, the euthanasia was carried out.

Following her death, relatives stated that safeguards for vulnerable patients had been violated and that there had been a lack of transparency. In their view, after the woman's initial refusal of euthanasia, the facility's staff should not have re-initiated the procedure without the involvement of her legal representative.

The Union of Orthodox Journalists previously reported that the French parliament passed a law legalizing euthanasia.
