The spirit of antichrist within the church enclosure
In theological and eschatological discussions, the time of the antichrist's coming is often associated with external factors: geopolitical upheavals, globalization, technological development, or the decline of morality in secular society. However, such a view misses the deep, spiritual nerve of the problem.
The coming of the "man of sin" is not merely an external act of violence against humanity. It is a response to an internal demand. And this demand ripens simultaneously in two environments: in the world living by the spirit of this age, and within the Church itself – in the souls of churchgoing people and, above all, the clergy. When these two vectors converge at a single point, the one whom Holy Scripture calls the antichrist will appear in the world.
Let us begin our analysis with the Church, because the substitution of Christ with the spirit of the world – which occurs and has always occurred among people far from God – comes as no surprise.
The world living by its own laws naturally moves toward apostasy. The true tragedy unfolds when this process strikes the Body of Christ from within.
Yet even in this there is nothing new: history knows many such examples. But in former times there were no such technical and informational means capable of so widely replicating and exacerbating the problems that arise within church institutions.
Holy Scripture gives us an inviolable promise: "And upon this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" (Mt. 16:18). However, it is important to understand that the Church in its earthly, historical aspect consists of specific people. And when the majority of representatives of the earthly Church – those called to be "the salt of the earth" – undergo an inner substitution, something catastrophic occurs.
The most dangerous thing here is that the substitution takes place imperceptibly. It is like leprosy: the nerves are damaged, nothing hurts, yet the destruction of the body goes ever deeper. No one renounces God – on the contrary, spiritual life is destroyed under the most plausible, "ecclesiastical" and "pious" pretexts.
This happens when the ideology of "symphony" with the state is gradually placed above the purity of the Gospel's teaching; when social, humanitarian, and cultural activity becomes the primary criterion of the "success" of a parish or diocese; when fusion with the political climate displaces the Eucharistic center of church life. And when secularization reaches the point at which prayer and inner spiritual life are no longer given priority, the Church loses the spirit of Christ, becoming akin to the spirit of antichrist even before his physical appearance.
How does this manifest itself?
The replacement of Christ with "traditional values" and militarist ideology.
In the official lexicon of recent years, the very Name of Christ and the Gospel are increasingly displaced by abstract concepts: traditional foundations, the language of dignity, civilizational code, the defense of geopolitical interests. "Values" can be defended while being utterly alien to the spirit of Christ – without love for enemies, without meekness, and without mercy. The values of state ideology are placed above the Truth proclaimed by the Gospel.
The displacement of prayer and repentance by "sacred" patriotism and "social work."
The creation of specialized commissions for sports, hyperactivity in the sphere of mass culture and church construction – all of this is declared to be a mission for the modern world. But it is aimed primarily at serving state interests. The cultural-bureaucratic aesthetic displaces the spiritual feat of sobriety. Fasting, prayer, and following the path of the Holy Fathers are replaced by collective ideological work in accordance with the state agenda.
It was not without reason that Saint Ignatius pointed to the Old Testament Church. Having taken the path of outward legalism, having lost the spirit of the prophets and replaced living communion with God with the expectation of a powerful earthly King who would subjugate the pagan nations, the Pharisees and chief priests committed the most terrible lawlessness in history – the crucifixion of the Fulfiller of the Law. The Old Testament righteous were not evildoers in the ordinary sense. They were defending their temple, their nation, their traditional institutions, and their political security: "If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation" (Jn. 11:48). But their spirit had so degenerated that they crucified the true God.
Today we can observe certain parallels with this tragedy.
The expectation of an earthly kingdom. In the period of its decline, the Old Testament Church lived in intense expectation of an earthly King-Liberator – a ruler who was to establish the national greatness of the Jewish people and defeat external enemies. In recent history, a similar shift can be observed in certain Churches: instead of preaching the Kingdom of Heaven – a merging with state power. The stake is placed not on the power of the Holy Spirit, but on administrative resources, political influence, and the military might of the state.
The victory of form over spirit. The spiritual degeneration of the Old Testament system manifested itself in the fact that the spirit of the law was entirely displaced by external rites, sacrifices, and the formal status of righteousness by virtue of belonging to the chosen people. In contemporary church life, this results in the replacement of the basic commandments of love, mercy, and peace with the legal and institutional protection of the "legitimate interests of the structure." Gospel imperatives are displaced by state laws, and outward piety becomes more important than inner transformation.
The acceptance of the antichrist is not a regrettable mistake born of ignorance, nor is it the absence of theological education. It is the ultimate, pathological distortion of human freedom.
When a churchgoing person becomes accustomed to substituting what is primary – repentance, prayer, the fulfillment of the commandments – with what is secondary: the status of the Church in society, patriotic ideology, culture, or sport, his spiritual vision atrophies. He loses his "sense of Christ."
The terrible truth of contemporary institutional life is that the secularized condition becomes so comfortable for the carnal mind that the ecclesiastical majority can no longer, and no longer wishes to, renounce the substitution by its own efforts. The system begins to defend this substitution as truth, declaring any call to evangelical purity as out of keeping with the spirit of the times, as "betrayal" or "heresy."
This is precisely why the eschatological finale of history requires direct and special Divine intervention. Humanity – and above all the ecclesiastical environment, the salt that has lost its savor, that has perverted the gift of freedom – will reach a threshold beyond which its correction and renewal by human effort alone will become impossible.
The antichrist will come when, within the church enclosure, a spirit corresponding to him has formed – a spirit of earthly power, outward righteousness, and the substitution of the spiritual with the soulish.
Recent history shows: one can build churches, hold sports and youth forums, wield enormous influence in the state – and at the same time rapidly hasten the coming of the antichrist, preparing souls to receive his spirit.
