Authorities of Greece and Egypt speak out in defense of Christians in Syria
The politicians condemned the attacks on civilians and religious sites in southern Syria and called on the Syrian authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of all segments of the population.
On August 6, 2025, the governments of Greece and Egypt condemned recent attacks on civilians and religious sites in southern Syria, urging Syrian authorities to take measures to protect all vulnerable groups, especially Christians.
This statement was made by Greek Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis during a joint press conference with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty, held in Athens on August 6.
“We condemn the recent attacks on civilians and religious sites in southern Syria and call on the country’s transitional government to take all necessary preventive and deterrent measures to ensure the safety of all segments of the population, particularly Christians, as well as all religious and ethnic communities,” said the Greek Foreign Minister.
He also emphasized that Athens and Cairo stand for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of the Syrian state, as well as for the participation of all Syrians in shaping its future, in full accordance with international law.
The press conference followed a round of negotiations in which the two sides discussed the situation in the Middle East and the need to protect the Christian presence in the region.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Islamists in Syria had killed a Christian pastor and 20 members of his family.
