The vice president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference called for “restoring dignity” to homosexual Catholics and spoke of Pope Leo’s blessing.

Bishop Francesco Savino, vice president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, during a sermon at a Mass for LGBT Catholics in the Church of the Gesù in Rome, declared that “God loves us with a unique and unconditional love.”

“We want to leave convinced that God loves us, of a singular and unique love, of an asymmetrical love, of a love without conditions,” the prelate stated, urging liberation from prejudice and ideology.

Addressing homosexuals, Savino stressed that the time had come “to restore dignity to all, especially those to whom it has been denied.” His words about restoring dignity were met with prolonged applause from more than a thousand attendees.

The bishop spoke about a meeting with Pope Leo, during which the pontiff blessed participation in the event. “Go and celebrate the Jubilee organized by Tenda di Gionata and the other groups that work with brothers and sisters, who are all of you,” Savino quoted the Pope as saying.

In his homily, the bishop called for distinguishing between a “living truth” and a “dead truth,” noting that “living truth gives life, dead truth kills.” He also quoted Pope Francis: “Reality is greater than the idea,” urging preference for reality over prejudice.

“The human person and their dignity cannot be erased,” Savino concluded.

Earlier, the UOJ reported that a Catholic bishop criticized the Mass for LGBT Catholics in Rome.
