OCU reps back renaming Kyiv lane after Filaret Denysenko
The OCU representatives called on Kyiv residents to rename a lane near Sophia Square in honor of Filaret Denysenko for his merits in creating the OCU.
The OCU members have backed an initiative to rename Rylskyi Lane in Kyiv’s historic center after Filaret Denysenko and urged residents to support the proposal in a poll on the Kyiv Digital app.
The authors of the petition proposed commemorating Filaret Denysenko, citing what they described as his key role in the creation of the OCU.
“The personality and numerous good deeds of the late His Holiness Patriarch Filaret rightfully hold a special place in the modern history of both the Local Ukrainian Orthodox Church and Ukraine as a whole,” the document states.
Members of Dumenko’s organization also said that Denysenko’s actions made it possible to hold the 2018 “Unification Council.”
“It was thanks to his decision and deliberate position that the successful holding of the Unification Council at St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv in December 2018, the organizational establishment of a united Local Orthodox Church of Ukraine, and the receipt of the Tomos of autocephaly became possible,” they stated.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Dumenko thanked Filaret for his role in creating the OCU.
