Greek hierarch invited to visit Kyiv in response to his criticism of OCU
A Greek journalist urged Metropolitan Seraphim of Kythira not to fear airstrikes and to visit Kyiv in person to gain a better understanding of the situation surrounding the OCU.
Greek journalist Kostas Onisenko, writing for Fos Fanariou, called on Metropolitan Seraphim of Kythira and Antikythera to visit Kyiv in response to the hierarch’s statement that Epifaniy Dumenko’s episcopal consecration was invalid, UOJ in Greece reports on the article.
In his piece, the journalist suggested that Metropolitan Seraphim visit Ukraine personally to see firsthand the conditions in which people are living amid the war, speak with believers, and, on that basis, reconsider his position.
According to the journalist, the Greek hierarch’s statements about the OCU’s lack of canonical status undermine the structure’s efforts to establish its institutions and unite parishes. Onisenko argued that after the Ecumenical Patriarchate granted the Tomos in 2019 and the Church of Greece subsequently recognized the OCU, Metropolitan Seraphim is effectively challenging synodal decisions that have already been made.
“For a better understanding of the situation, I believe the Metropolitan of Kythira should visit Kyiv to see for himself some of the things on which he expresses his views,” the journalist suggested.
At the end of the article, Onisenko urged Metropolitan Seraphim not to fear drone and bomb strikes, stressing that a hierarch who has entrusted his life to God “has no right to be afraid” of traveling to Kyiv.
