A UGCC bishop urged the Hungarian authorities to support Ukraine’s accession to the EU, pointing to the price Ukrainians have paid for their European choice.

Bishop Stepan Sus, head of the UGCC’s Pastoral and Migration Department, called on Hungarian Minister for Social Relations and Culture Zoltán Tarr to support Ukraine’s European integration, according to the UGCC press service.

The UGCC representative met with the Hungarian official during a visit to Budapest and recalled the events of the Revolution of Dignity. “Not many peoples in Europe have paid with the lives of their citizens for their European choice and European integration. Ukraine paid for it in blood – through the sacrifice of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred. And the current war is a continuation of our struggle for independence, freedom, human dignity and democratic values – for everything on which the European Union is built,” Sus said.

The bishop also thanked the Hungarian authorities for supporting Ukrainian communities in Budapest, Nyíregyháza and other cities across the country. He particularly noted their assistance in providing children with education in their native language.

“We truly feel your support. I am especially grateful for your care for Ukrainian schools and for helping ensure that our children in Hungary have the opportunity to receive an education in Ukrainian, to pray in their native language, and to preserve their culture, faith and memory of their roots. For people who have found themselves far from home because of the war, this is extremely important.”

As the UOJ reported, a delegation of the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations discussed Ukraine’s European integration with EU lawmakers.
