Stefanchuk: Seeking UCCRO-LGBT compromise on new Civil Code
The Verkhovna Rada speaker said the working group is seeking a broad public compromise as it revises the draft of the new Civil Code.
Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk said that as the draft of the new Civil Code is revised for its second reading, its authors will seek to incorporate key amendments proposed by the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (UCCRO) and the LGBT community, Suspilne reports.
According to the Rada speaker, lawmakers’ main priority is the quality of the final document rather than how quickly it is adopted.
“The timeframe is not important to us – quality is. What matters is bringing a high-quality bill to the floor,” Ruslan Stefanchuk stressed.
Stefanchuk noted that revisions to the draft will address, among other things, reproductive medicine, the rights and interests of military personnel and farmers, as well as proposals raised during meetings with the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations and representatives of the LGBT community. According to him, the authors are seeking a compromise on the disputed provisions.
He also said that a large number of amendments had been submitted to the bill, some of which proved to be “spam,” but the working group is now carefully reviewing all substantive proposals.
“We want to identify, from each side, the points that can bring us closer to a compromise on this bill. The Civil Code is a unique code that must ensure balance and compromise across society.”
As the UOJ reported, earlier Yelensky stated that UCCRO is capable of compromising on LGBT issues for the sake of EU accession.
